There are a number of different keys available. Since the key will plug into your computer, the most important factor to consider when choosing a security key is what type of USB port you have.
You’ll generally see 2 options:
- USB-A: These ports are larger, and typically found on computers that are a few years older. They would not be found on a phone. If you're looking to purchase a Google Titan Key, this one would be called the "USB-A/NFC Security key" (pretty straightforward!). If you're buying a Yubikey, it's the "YubiKey5 NFC" (there's no "A" in the key title, but it's for an A port).
- USB-C: These ports are smaller and appear on newer computers and Android phones. Some new Macs only have USB-C ports (Some machines have both USB-A and USB-C). Google Titan versions of this key are called "USB-C/NFC Security Key", whereas YubiKeys are called "YubiKey 5C NFC".
Since the key has NFC (Near Field Communication) in the title and descriptions, these keys are compatible with your cell phone and can be used by touching the key to the back of the phone rather than inserting it.
Yubico has this quiz on their website which can also help determine which keys is right for you: https://www.yubico.com/quiz/
